Preparing for Election of Elders
and Deacons:
The work of the Nominating Committee this fall is to
develop a slate of candidates to present to the
congregation for election at its Congregational Meeting
December 7. The nominating committee is made up of
2 elders of the church, a representative from the board
of deacons, and at-large members of the congregation
elected last January.
The election of church officers is at the heart of what it
means to be Presbyterian. The nominating committee
welcomes suggestions to consider for the important
roles of Elder on the Session, Deacon on the Board of
Deacons, or Trustee of the Endowment Fund. Please give
prayerful thought to any individuals you feel have
demonstrated gifts for leadership and a commitment to
the life and ministry of this congregation. A form will be
made available to use to submit names for consideration,
or you may speak with a member of the committee.
What do church officers do?
Elders serving on the
Session have responsibilities that include receiving new
members, leading the congregation in mission, providing
for worship and the administration of the sacraments,
offering educational programs and fellowship
opportunities, and challenging the congregation in its stewardship of time, talent and financial resources.
Deacons are often called the “heart of the church” – the
board of deacons is charged with the care of the
congregation. Terms on the current board of session or
deacons are three years.
Trustees monitor the
performance of church funds and serve for five years.
Nominees for elders, deacons, or trustee must be a
member of the church and a faithful participant in the
worship and program life of the church. Of course –-
there are plenty of additional opportunities to get involved!
